Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition Free Update: Why It Is Not Free and What Owners Get
✓ Last verified 2026-10-14 · How we check facts
Quick answer
Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition is not a free update to the original game. It is a separate product, but existing Steam owners of the original receive any legacy DLC they do not own for free and a 75 percent loyalty discount until November 12, 2026.
Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition is not a free update. It is a separate product that bundles the 2011 game and all of its DLC into one package. If you already own the original, asking whether this is a free update is a fair question. Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition gives existing Steam owners real benefits, but the product itself must be treated as a new purchase, with the discount and legacy DLC rules below.
What Original Owners Actually Get
If you own the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam, you receive any legacy DLC you do not already own for free. You also get a time-limited 75 percent loyalty discount on Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition. The discount started at launch on October 13, 2026 and runs until November 12, 2026 at 16:00 GMT.
The official FAQ from Creative Assembly explains the rules in more detail. You can read it on the Complete Edition FAQ post from Creative Assembly, which is the official source for this topic.
| Your Situation | What You Get | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Steam owner of the original | Legacy DLC you do not own | Free |
| Steam owner of the original | 75 percent loyalty discount | Until November 12, 2026 |
| New buyer on Steam | Full bundle | Includes the original and its DLC, except Blood Pack |
Why Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition Is Not a Free Update
The Complete Edition is a remaster-style re-release with a 64-bit upgrade, updated graphics, new modern controls and more newly playable minor factions. Those upgrades ship as a new product, so they are not sold as an update to the original game. The original SHOGUN 2 build is left as it was, and changes in Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition apply to that product only.
Because of this, the original game and Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition are separate purchases on Steam. Since September 28, 2026, the original can no longer be bought on its own on Steam, so the Complete Edition is now the way new players get the original content.
Who Counts as an Original Owner
The benefits described here are tied to owning the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam. That is the group the official offer describes. If you bought the original from another store, do not assume the same offer applies to you. Check the FAQ and the store page for your account before you buy, because the rules for other stores may differ.
Ownership is also what decides which legacy DLC you receive. You get the legacy DLC you do not already own, so a player who has bought some of the expansions will not receive duplicates. This is why the free-DLC benefit is worth checking against your own Steam library before you make a purchase decision.
Why the Discount Matters for Your Budget
Key dates for owners and buyers:
| Date | Event | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| October 13, 2026 | Launch and discount start | Complete Edition is out now |
| September 28, 2026 | Steam store change | The original game can no longer be bought standalone |
| November 12, 2026 | Discount ends | Loyalty discount ends at 16:00 GMT |
The 75 percent loyalty discount is a major saving for existing owners, and it has a fixed end point. It runs until November 12, 2026 at 16:00 GMT. Convert that deadline into your local time, then compare it with your plans. If you are waiting for a sale or a bundle, remember that the loyalty discount is a separate, time-limited offer.
Do not confuse the loyalty discount with a normal sale price. The regular price for the Steam US store is $39.99, and the discount applies to that price for eligible owners while the offer runs. After November 12, 2026, the normal price applies to everyone, including existing owners who did not buy during the discount window.
Platform Differences for Buyers
The purchase bonus depends on where you buy. Steam includes the original SHOGUN 2 and all of its DLC, except the Blood Pack. Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG include the Complete Edition only. If you want the most content for one price, Steam is the option that includes the original game, but check the current price and discount page before you decide.
How to Get the Best Price Legally
The legitimate ways to get the lowest price are limited to official channels. If you already own the original, review the current discount options and check your Steam library for the legacy DLC you are entitled to. Be careful with unofficial sellers and sites that promise a no-cost copy. Official sources have not announced any giveaway of the Complete Edition.
Also check the discount end date. The 75 percent loyalty discount ends on November 12, 2026 at 16:00 GMT, so a purchase made after that moment would be at the normal price.
Mods and Compatibility
Mods are a common reason people hope for a free upgrade. Mods for the original SHOGUN 2 remain unchanged and keep working in the original game. They are not compatible with the Complete Edition. The Complete Edition supports mods through Mod.io, and Creative Assembly has said more details about the modding kit will come in a separate post. Until that post is published, treat any claim about modding tools as unconfirmed.
