Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition vs Shogun 2: What Changed and Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition is an enhanced re-release of the 2011 strategy game and all of its DLC in one package. If you are deciding between the new release and the original, the core strategy design is the same, while the engine, visuals, controls and content list have been updated. Creative Assembly and MATABOO developed Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition, and SEGA publishes it. Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition was released on October 13, 2026, so it is available now.

What Stayed the Same

The Complete Edition keeps the original rules. The Sengoku campaign still starts in mid-16th century Japan, where your daimyo tries to take Kyoto from the shogunate and become shogun. Growing too powerful still triggers Realm Divide, when rival clans turn against you. The difference is that a new Realm Divide slider lets you keep the original behaviour, make it harder, or turn it off entirely. Arts are still researched one at a time.

If you already know the 2011 game, you will not need to relearn the basics. You can check the official details on the Complete Edition Steam store page before you buy.

Visual and Engine Upgrades

The biggest change is the engine. The Complete Edition is a 64-bit build with UI scaling for 1440p and 4K screens, and most of the interface has been reskinned. Borderless fullscreen mode now lets you choose the monitor. Camera height can go higher in land and naval battles, so you can zoom out further than before.

Rendering technology from Total War: Three Kingdoms and Total War: Warhammer 3 has been brought into the game. Shadows, lighting, fog and skyboxes are improved, and the campaign map changes its lighting with the seasons. Units, ships, buildings and terrain have updated textures, and some models were updated too.

Controls and Quality-of-Life Changes

The Complete Edition adds modern controls. Alt plus left-click drag moves units, and Ctrl plus Alt plus left-click drag rotates them. Single-unit groups are supported, you can hold the arrow keys to move units, and the hotkeys now match newer Total War games. Key sets can be saved.

Other changes help with readability. Colour-blind presets cover deuteranopia, protanopia and tritanopia, plus a custom option. Custom Battles have an auto-army button. On the campaign map, holding Spacebar shows overlays for ownership, attitude, diplomatic status, wealth, public order and food. In battle, Spacebar hides the interface, and a bird's-eye view lets you see the whole battlefield.

What Is Included in the Package

The Complete Edition combines three campaigns that cover the timeline from 1175 to 1876.

Rise of the Samurai12th-century Gempei WarSix clans from the Taira, Minamoto and Fujiwara families
Fall of the SamuraiBoshin War from 1864Firearms, artillery and modern warships

The package also includes the DLC packs, such as the Ikko Ikki, Hattori and Otomo clan packs, the unit packs and the Fall of the Samurai faction packs. The Blood Pack is not part of the Steam bundle because of its age rating.

Minor Factions and Diplomacy

The Complete Edition adds more than 50 newly playable minor factions across the three campaigns. The official list includes names such as Amako, Imagawa and Mogami in the Sengoku campaign, and Akamatsu, Nitta and Soga in Rise of the Samurai. The Republic of Ezo is not on the official list of newly playable factions.

Diplomacy has a Quick Deal option that shows how likely each faction is to accept each type of deal. You can also double-click a foreign agent, army or settlement to open diplomacy directly. For a full look at the feature list, read our Complete Edition features overview.

Who Should Choose Which Version

Buying on Steam includes the original SHOGUN 2 and all of its DLC, except the Blood Pack. Since September 28, 2026, the original game can no longer be bought on its own on Steam. Existing owners keep the original game, which is unchanged. Changes in Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition apply only to the new product.

Mods are the biggest practical difference. Mods for the original SHOGUN 2 remain unchanged and keep working in the original game, but they are not compatible with Total War SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition. Before you spend money, check the current price and discount options.
